Meet Shahidah Shamsid-Deen from Bermuda

Why did you choose to attend New England Institute of Technology and major in Business Management?

When I was seven years old my mother opened her own upholstery business. For 20 years I watched my mother struggle to keep her business operating, due to the fact that she never had the opportunity to obtain a college education. As I watched my mother make the necessary sacrifices to maintain the success of her business, I admired her ambition, her motivation, her determination to fulfill her goals and dreams, and all the rewards she achieved from administrating her own business, such as owning her own home, high self-esteem, self-fulfillment, financial security and her strong desire to help others. I knew than that I wanted to become an entrepreneur just like my mother. For this reason, the most important pursuit in my life presently is to achieve a college education in Business Management. With this focus I can help my mother maintain the success of her business, help others effectively manage their business, and ultimately be able to successfully operate my own business in the future.

Throughout my research of colleges I found that I could obtain a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management Technology in as little as three years at New England Institute of Technology (NEIT). So far I have successfully obtained my Associate’s degree in Computerized Business Management at N.E.I.T and I am currently pursing my Bachelor’s degree in Business Management. New England Tech has provided me with hands on technical training, and analytical and critically thinking skills I needed for employment. I have thoroughly enjoyed my experiences at New England Tech. New England Tech has helped me reach my true potential. Potential, which I never thought I had due to my lack of self-confidence and insecurities. Throughout my college experience at New England Tech I have achieved numerous awards such as the 2004 Best of Tech Award, 2004 Tech Scholar Award, 2004 Humanities and Social Science Award on top of achieving numerous awards in my technology for attendance and highest grade point average. I am also currently a member of the Student Advisory Counsel at N.E.I.T and an active participant in student activities. N.E.I.T has played an active role in encouraging student participation in technology-related, cultural and social activities. There are numerous tech-related activities and organizations offered at N.E.I.T that help foster the development of leadership skills such as SkillsUSA, The Computer Club, The Automotive Pit Crew Club, Video and Audio Production Club, International Fairs, and various student activities for students to participate.

My college experience at New England Tech has taught me to think outside the box. N.E.I.T has broaden my horizon on life and has given me the opportunity to develop endless relationships and meet with people from all nationalities, such as St. Martin, The British Virgin Islands, Nigeria, Ghana, Indonesia and even people from Bermuda that I never knew before. New England Tech has thoroughly increased my knowledge of Technology and all that it has to offer. Technology is changing everyday, and it is imperative that we are mindful of these changes in order to compete with other businesses, even other students who may be applying for the same job as you. As a result, N.E.I.T has provided me with the technical skills required throughout my career in Business Management Technology.

I must also give acknowledgement to all my teachers at N.E.I.T. The instructors at N.E.I.T are phenomenal. They are dedicated and committed to each student’s success; they are extremely educated, helpful, thoughtful, empathic, and considerate. They give each student the attention they need and deserve. I don’t think I could have been as successful as I have been at New England Tech without the hard work and dedication of all my instructors including the Academic Resource Center.

In conclusion, I would strongly recommend N.E.I.T to any student pursuing a technology degree. I am extremely happy with my decision to attend New England Tech and I am positive that the experiences, skills, knowledge and tools that have acquired at N.E.I.T will successfully help me reach my goal of becoming an entrepreneur.
