Construction/Design Networking Night

A networking event for students and alumni from Construction Management, Building Construction/Cabinetmaking, Architectural Building Engineering, Interior Design & Civil Engineering was held on Wednesday, October 26 from 4:30-6:00 in the design studio on the East Greenwich campus. 17 companies were in attendance, including 7 alumni who are employed by several of the companies who participated. Each company had a table where they displayed their information and spoke with students and faculty in a casual setting. Bethany Schaarschmidt from NEIT’s Admissions office also participated and provided information about the Master’s program in Construction Management. Food and prizes rounded out a great event that received a lot of positive feedback from both employers and students, with one employer stating it “exceeded expectations”. The Career Services Office would like to thank everyone who participated and helped to make this another successful event!

Industry Links Week

Each year, Heating Department Chair Ron Como brings students together with leaders in the heating industry through classroom presentations and site visits during “Industry Links Week”. This year, from September 12th through September 15th, heating students enrolled in the Plumbing/Heating & Gas Technology and Refrigeration/AC Heating & Gas Technology programs were able to visit with several local companies: Heat Transfer Products, in New Bedford, MA, Modine Heaters in West Kingston, RI, and AMTROL, in East Greenwich, RI. During class time, Chief Mechanical Inspector for the RI Department of Labor & Training, Nick Ranone, addressed the class, as well as Henry Roma, Regional Manager for Santoro Oil Company. The heating industry has seen a burst in job opportunities as qualified candidates continue to be in high demand across all trades. May was a busy month for the Career Services Office. Over 330 job leads came through the office marking the most leads in a month so far in 2016!

  • An online job board dedicated to the Marine industry currently has close to 100 jobs in the Marine Trades around the country! There are about 25 jobs in MA and RI in jobs ranging from Sales, Office Help, Yard Foreman to Technicians and Charter Boat Captains.

NEIT SkillsUSA team take home 7 Gold medals

SkillsUSA is national organization serving more than 264,500 high school and college students and professional members enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled, and service occupations, including health occupations.

SkillsUSA programs include local, state and national competitions in which students demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. During the annual national-level SkillsUSA Championships, more than 4,500 students compete in 77 occupational and leadership skill areas. SkillsUSA programs also help to establish industry standards for job skill training in the classroom.

NEIT is a postsecondary Chapter of SkillsUSA and on Thursday, March 24th RI SkillsUSA held their annual awards ceremony at Veterans Memorial Auditorium.  That night we found out who the winners were in their technical areas.  First place winners will go on to nationals in Louisville, KY to travel on to the nation championship in June to compete against other college students from all over the country.  There the students will compete against top students in their technical area from all over.

We are pleased to announce that we have 7 NEIT gold medalists going on to nationals this year.

An automotive service company posted a PowerPoint project job for GMW students to help train candidates in driving school.

A Clinical Medical Assistant position came in from a doctor’s office in Cranston. We are seeing jobs come in on a very steady basis seeking Clinical Medical Assistant’s due to the present shortage of candidates in the field. A recent Clinical Medical Assistant grad said she is “seeing more jobs for CMA’s than there are candidates to fill them!”

Physical Therapist Assistant: Several jobs came in for Physical Therapist Assistants. We get a number of jobs in the New England area as well as jobs from across the US. Jobs this week:

• A sports medicine company in California contacted NEIT looking for PTA graduates. They work almost exclusively with sports medicine related injuries.
• Also received a full-time PTA job for a company in Vermont.

CAREERS IN THE CONSTRUCTION TRADES!

Northeastern Retail Lumber Association (NRLA) invited faculty and students from Building Construction/Cabinetmaking and Construction Management to attend the Lumber & Building Materials Expo on Friday, 2/12. NRLA organized a light breakfast and a few speakers from the industry: National Lumber, L Sweet Lumber and Douglas Lumber spoke to students about what the world of construction looks like today.

• The 16 students had the chance to visit with show exhibitors and both students and faculty found this to be a great event for making future contacts for job opportunities and learning about new products.
• Joe Sepe, BCC Department Chair has invited 3 companies to come to campus and visit with the students in his class.
• Many of the students commented that they had no idea there were so many different opportunities within the construction/lumber industry once they graduate!

Here’s a look at our weekly roundup of good news from the Career Services Office!

A local Health Center posted a role for a Clinical Medical Assistant.  CMA’s from NEIT have significant opportunities in the job market and medical facilities reach out to the college on a regular basis seeking candidates.  Employers often say that they like the NEIT grads because they hold an Associate Degree vs. a certificate.

Surgical Technology currently has 3 hospitals searching for grads. A recent grad was just hired by one of them and they are still looking for more!

A therapy treatment center in RI reached out to NEIT seeking Physical Therapist Assistant graduates.  The hiring manager said they have both Occupational Therapy Assistants and PTA’s from NEIT and they are very happy with their training and skills.

A national, full-service B2B Digital Marketing Agency in Massachusetts recently hired a Graphics, Multimedia and Web Design grad and have reached out to NEIT seeking more candidates for additional roles.  The grad who works there as a Digital Marketing Associate stated: “This new job is the best I’ve had. I’ve already learned so much.”

The Health Sciences Fair that the Career Services Office held in October is still receiving great feedback from employers! Isabel Cravens, Staffing Specialist from Newton-Wellesley Hospital stated, “I attended a Health Science job fair event at NEIT. I was very impressed by the event and it was wonderful to be able to meet so many students and faculty. A software company in Massachusetts posted a total of 4 Information Technology jobs with NEIT and they have already hired 2 IT Software Engineering graduates. The recruiter stated that they are “thrilled” with the NEIT candidates.

There are currently 5 employers recruiting Construction Management and Architectural/Building Engineering candidates for companies located throughout Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
