College Grads With Work-Ready Skills Are In Demand

College grads are in demand. In fact, the percentage of employers in the United States that plan to hire new college grads is at a 10-year high, according to a new national survey. One primary reason is that recent college grads possess both the knowledge and skills that many older workers do not, and have the appropriate “can do” attitude that employers are seeking.

Employers are most attracted to technological expertise. Today’s college graduates were raised in a time of rapid technological change – and those who sharpened those skills with a technical degree are even more attractive.

“…half of these hiring companies plan to offer starting annual salaries of $50,000 or more.”

The survey was commissioned by the employment services company CareerBuilder. One major result is that 74 percent of employers in the U.S. plan to hire recent college grads in 2017, as compared to 67 percent just one year ago. The finds also revealed that about half of these hiring companies plan to offer starting annual salaries of $50,000 or more.

Some of the most in-demand graduates are those with degrees in the fields of engineering, technology, IT, business management and media studies – all majors that New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) offers. According to a report from the staffing company iCIMS, 61 percent of companies plan to hire graduates from the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Those with those degrees are favored by 55 percent of hiring companies, and those with degrees in arts, communication and media are sought after by 48 percent of U.S. companies.

Participating companies also reported that they are specifically looking for graduates who are “work ready” – those with the knowledge and hands-on skills who can hit the ground running – which is the foundation of NEIT’s educational approach.

“Graduates of our technical degree programs in engineering, communications and IT are some of the most sought after candidates in today’s job market,” says Patricia Blakemore, Director of Career Services at New England Institute of Technology. “The workforce is aging and the skilled talent to fill these jobs is scarce. This next generation of college graduates coming out of technical degree programs is going to experience a very robust job market – we have been seeing signs of this for the past 2-3 years.”

Alumni Spotlight: Retired Army Vet Glenn Josephides Pursuing His Passion

New England Tech - military friendly college“My military career made me a better student”

Retired U.S. Army veteran Glenn Josephides pursued his life-long passion for automotive technology at New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) by securing three associate degree programs in Automotive Technology with High Performance; Automotive Collision Repair Technology; and Advanced Marine Technology.

  • What prompted you to return to school as an adult learner?
One simple phrase sums up why I returned to school after I retired from the Army. I’ve made it a life motto: ‘Life is a learning lesson:  If you don’t learn something during the day; that was wasted.’
  • Why did you choose New England Institute of Technology?
I’ve worked on cars as a hobbyist and tinkered with other types of equipment my whole life. I was self-taught and have never had formal or even informal guidance. New England Tech not only provided an opportunity for that formal instruction, but it also offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees and not just Certificates of Training. The combination of lecture and hands-on application provides the ‘Full Spectrum of Learning.’
  • What military education benefits, such as the GI Bill, did you use?
New England Tech is a Yellow Ribbon participant. I started at NEIT using the last of my Montgomery GI Bill (Ch. 30). Then used my Post 9/11 GI Bill (Ch. 33) with the Yellow Ribbon.
  • What has your experience been like as a student or alumnus?
As a ‘non-traditional’ student I’ve had a different set of challenges to overcome. The traditional student is fresh from a learning environment and typically has fewer responsibilities in life. My academic career has a different set of hurdles in addition to furthering my knowledge; fatherhood and homeownership to mention a couple. The instructors have been nothing short of magnificent. Their ability to instruct the complex material at levels to keep everyone challenged and yet not over-burdened is an art skill.

“Life is a learning lesson”

  • What challenges did you have adjusting to campus culture after military life?
The challenge one faces during a transition from a structured to a non-structured way of life are unique.  Timeliness, accountability, and responsibility are more exemplified in the military, plus there’s a level of efficiency in the military that’s not appreciated until it becomes void in your life.
  • Do you believe your military experience made you a better student?
There’s absolutely no question that my military career has made me a better student! Time management, focus, and respect are only a few non-tangible lessons learned that have helped me through all of my aforementioned challenges during my academic career.
  • What advice do you have for veterans returning to school?
Be the example! Maintain your ‘military bearing.’ You’re looked to as a leader by your fellow students as well as by your instructors.
  • Any additional thoughts?
My overall experience at New England Tech has been very fulfilling. All three degree programs have proven to be rewarding challenges. I’m looking forward to seeing what adventures are coming as I enter the next chapter of life……. Stay tuned J

20th Annual New England Tech TechXpo a Success!

The Career Services Office at NEIT hosted it’s 20th annual TechXpo Career Fair on the East Greenwich Campus on Thursday, March 9th. The well-attended event attracted over 60 employers from the region who were impressed by the level of quality of both current students and alumni. Jeremy Girard of Envision Technology Advisors, who is an NEIT alumnus from ’00, commented that,

“The weakest candidate I saw here today was better than the best candidate I’ve seen at other career fairs.”

Many of the employers in attendance were NEIT alumni, with about 25 in total returning to the college to represent their respective companies. A few representatives even made a point to stay after the event to visit with instructors they had while they were in school.

Students and alumni who were able to speak with employers expressed the importance of this event and how they felt it prepared them for employment. In addition to learning more about the companies themselves, attendees also learned about types positions in their field they might not have thought of. One IT student explained,

“Getting to know what companies are looking for is more than just helpful, it’s essential.”

The TechXpo is the biggest career fair that the Career Services Office hosts, and one of several technology-tailored career fairs held annually. These events are only open to NEIT students and alumni, and are not open to the public. NEIT would like to thank the students and staff who volunteered and helped to make this another great event! For a list of companies who attended the event, and their contact information, please visit the Career Services Office in S104.

Pay Gap Between College and High School Grads Never Been Larger

To do list for high school gradsThe earnings gap between those with a college degree versus those with a high school degree has never been wider, according to a recent article by the Associated Press. On average, college grads earned 56 percent more than high school grads in 2015, according to an analysis conducted by the Economic Policy Institute (EPI). This has increased from 51% in 1999 and is the largest gap since the EPI started collecting data in 1973.

Further, since the end of the recession in 2009, college graduates have secured a significantly higher percentage of new jobs along with pay gains. By contrast, non-college graduates have faced a shortage of employment opportunities along with a 3% decline in their income. Just two-thirds of adults with high school-only degree aged 25 through 64 were employed in 2015, a steep drop from the 73 percent employment rate in 2007. For college graduates in the same age range, the employment rate fell just slightly from 84 percent to 83 percent.

“College grads earned 56 percent more than high school grads…”

College grads have traditionally earned more than those with less education. As the pay gaps widen, however, it is affecting lives beyond just income, including lower levels of home ownership, geographic mobility, marriage rates and age and quality of retirement.

College grads are also far more likely to have access and contribute to a 401(k)-style retirement plan. In 2015, college graduates contributed 26 percent more to their retirement savings even when individuals from both groups had similar income levels and similar access to these plans.

It’s increasingly clear that high school grads need to continue beyond high school to acquire the skills needed for higher-paying work. Though many middle-income jobs don’t require a bachelor’s degree, nearly all of them require some post-high school education or training, such as an associate degree.
