Physical Therapist Assistant Technology Associate’s Degree

- The physical therapist assistant works under the direction of a licensed physical therapist. They provide services to improve strength, flexibility, relieve pain, promote fitness, and quality of life of people suffering from injuries or disease. Physical therapist assistants perform a wide variety of tasks involving exercise, massage, electrical stimulation, heat/cold treatment, ultrasound, traction, and hydrotherapy. They provide training to improve ambulation, body mechanics, posture, and athletic performance.
- A Physical Therapist Assistant, under the supervision and direction of a Physical Therapist, provides safe and effective physical therapy interventions to diverse patient populations.
- Coursework combines general and clinical studies with problem-solving and clinical experiences.
- Students will explore various aspects of physical therapy to identify and develop career paths of interest.
- Level I Clinical Education is offered in Quarters 3 and 4. Level II Clinical Education is offered in Quarters 5 and 6. Each Level II Clinical Education experience includes full-time placement in a facility for six weeks for each placement, for a total of 12 weeks of Level II experience.
- Upon completion of all class and clinic studies, students will be eligible to sit for the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) for Physical Therapist Assistants administered by the Federation of State Boards for Physical Therapy (FSBPT). Students must pass this examination to be eligible for state licensure and to be a licensed Physical Therapist Assistant. Only licensed Physical Therapist Assistants can be employed in Rhode Island.
- Physical Therapist Assistants serve in a variety of settings such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health care agencies, long-term care facilities, rehabilitation facilities, schools, private practices, sports facilities, industrial medicine centers and fitness clinics.
- The PTA program at NEIT is seeking accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education. The program will submit an Application for Candidacy, which is the formal application required in the pre-accreditation stage. Submission of this document does not assure that the program will be granted Candidate for Accreditation status nor does it assure that the program will be granted Accreditation.
