Commencement Information 2018

Congratulations to the members of the 2018 Graduating Class!

You have worked very hard to earn your degree and you must be looking forward to celebrating this accomplishment with your faculty, family and friends! We look forward to seeing you at the 2018 Commencement!

Students who have completed or will complete all degree requirements during the following period: July, 2017 (Intersession) through June, 2018 (Spring Quarter) are invited to participate in this year’s ceremony.

Commencement will be held at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, One LaSalle Sq., Providence, RI 02903 on Sunday, May 6, at 11 a.m. Graduates must arrive by 9:45 a.m.
The ceremony typically lasts 2 ½ hours.  (The ceremony usually ends between 1:30 and 2:00, so any dinner reservations should be made late enough to allow time for travel and traffic.)

Graduates, plan to leave home early to allow enough time for travel and parking in order to be in the graduate line-up area by 9:45 a.m.  We expect that traffic will be heavy because of Commencement and the Providence Rhode Races, which are taking place in Providence that morning.  In addition, there may be some road closures for the races. If you leave home early, you should arrive to the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in sufficient time for graduate line-up and for the guests to find good seats.

The doors for general seating will open at 9:15 a.m.

The two recommended parking garages are:

Graduates, it is not too late to order your cap and gown if you have not done so already
If you have a cap and gown from another NEIT Commencement ceremony, you must order a new one this year. You may place your cap and gown order by going online to Scroll to the Cap and Gown section and click the Graduation Form link. Please contact Kayla Olsen, (401) 739-5000 or 1-800-736-7744 ext. 3642, if you have any questions or if you are unable to submit your order online.

Plan to pick up your cap and gown during the NEIT Grad Fair, which will be held on Wednesday, May 2, 11 a.m. -7 p.m., in the Student Lounge on the East Greenwich Campus.  If you cannot attend the Grad Fair, you may also pick up your cap and gown on Saturday, May 5, from noon - 3 p.m. in the East Greenwich Student Lounge.  Note:  There is no cost to you for your cap and gown, and hood for BS and MS grads.  Also, you may keep your cap and gown (and hood) as a keepsake. A friend or family member may pick up your regalia if you are unable to attend either of the distribution times.

Graduates who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK)  and the Alpha Chi Honor Society may choose to purchase a stole at the NEIT Bookstore or online from PTK ( or Alpha Chi ( signifying their membership in the honor society. NEIT graduates who graduate with honors will not receive a stole unless they are a PTK or Alpha Chi member and purchase one; however, their names will be announced “with honors” when they cross the stage. If you have questions or would like to join one of the honor societies, contact Karen Arnold Schultz, Assistant Provost, in the Office of Teaching and Learning at or 401-739-5000 ext. 3322.

Guests of the graduates should plan to arrive early to find the best seats; doors to general seating will open at 9:15 a.m. All guests will be required to pass through the security zone.

The seating for guests is stadium style seating (accessed by stairs).  There are several sections limited to guests with mobility impairments (sections 101, 106, 110, and 124). These sections are available on a first come, first served basis.  The guests sitting in these sections may be joined by only one other guest.

Note: No one other than the graduates can go onto the floor of the arena for any reason before or during Commencement.

The following is the Dunkin’ Donuts Center’s policy pertaining to bags: “Bags that are larger than 13 5/8” x 15 ¼” will not be permitted thru the security zone. Baggage such as bags, briefcases, backpacks, and luggage are strictly prohibited. Guests entering the Dunkin’ Donuts Center are subject to search at the discretion of Management. The Dunkin’ Donuts Center does not provide storage for any confiscated baggage."

Strollers are allowed; however, they cannot be brought to the seats because there is not enough room for the strollers and for people to access the rows into/out of the seats.

A letter with more details pertaining to Commencement was sent to all graduates.  If there are any questions, please contact Kayla Olsen at or at 401-739-5000 ext. 3642.
