Producing videos to sell homes is a practice that has moved well beyond the rarified realm of the luxury market.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Some videos are clearly amateur jobs, possibly shot with a mobile phone. Some are slickly professional. Others are almost works of art.
Producing videos to sell homes is a practice that has moved well beyond the rarified realm of the luxury market. Westcott Properties, a Providence agency that specializes in foreclosures, is even making videos for bank-owned properties and rentals.
Last week, more than 800 of the nearly 5,200 residential property listings on riliving.com, the website of Rhode Island’s State-Wide Multiple Listing Service, had some sort of video accompaniment. Some of these are video versions of photographic slide shows, many with voice-overs. But others are more lushly produced and look like short films.
Residential Properties, which has five offices in Rhode Island, has two full-time videographers on staff and has made more than 500 videos for clients. The company is planning to expand its video marketing to highlight communities, enhance agent bios, and produce a video podcast featuring CEO Sally Lapides, Readey said.
Chace and Readey said their videos usually include community footage in addition to featuring the house itself. As Readey said, “You’re not just buying the house, you’re buying the location.”
On Tuesday morning, the Residential team was shooting a video for a new listing at 215 Arlington Ave., in Providence; the house is priced at $1,375,000.
Listing Realtor Nancy Markham said it is one of a number of high-end properties coming on to the market this spring on Providence’s East Side. A video “raises the profile of the house higher in search engines,” Markham said, and “everybody is attached to their computers.”
