College Grads With Work-Ready Skills Are In Demand

College grads are in demand. In fact, the percentage of employers in the United States that plan to hire new college grads is at a 10-year high, according to a new national survey. One primary reason is that recent college grads possess both the knowledge and skills that many older workers do not, and have the appropriate “can do” attitude that employers are seeking.

Employers are most attracted to technological expertise. Today’s college graduates were raised in a time of rapid technological change – and those who sharpened those skills with a technical degree are even more attractive.

The survey was commissioned by the employment services company CareerBuilder. One major result is that 74 percent of employers in the U.S. plan to hire recent college grads in 2017, as compared to 67 percent just one year ago. The finds also revealed that about half of these hiring companies plan to offer starting annual salaries of $50,000 or more.

Some of the most in-demand graduates are those with degrees in the fields of engineering, technology, IT, business management and media studies – all majors that New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) offers. According to a report from the staffing company iCIMS, 61 percent of companies plan to hire graduates from the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Those with those degrees are favored by 55 percent of hiring companies, and those with degrees in arts, communication and media are sought after by 48 percent of U.S. companies.

Participating companies also reported that they are specifically looking for graduates who are “work ready” – those with the knowledge and hands-on skills who can hit the ground running – which is the foundation of NEIT’s educational approach.

“Graduates of our technical degree programs in engineering, communications and IT are some of the most sought after candidates in today’s job market,” says Patricia Blakemore, Director of Career Services at New England Institute of Technology. “The workforce is aging and the skilled talent to fill these jobs is scarce. This next generation of college graduates coming out of technical degree programs is going to experience a very robust job market – we have been seeing signs of this for the past 2-3 years.”

TechXpo 2016 Attracts Over 75 Companies and Hundreds of Students and Alumni

On March 10, 2016, the Career Services Office held its annual Technology Career Expo (TechXpo) on the East Greenwich Campus. This event is the largest career event that the college hosts, with hundreds of representatives attending from companies across the region and beyond. This year the event was geared towards students and alumni from Business Management, Criminal Justice, Cyber Security, Digital Media Production, Electrical Technology, Electronics Systems, Electrical Engineering, Game Development/Simulation Programming, Graphics/Multimedia/Web Design, Information Technology – Network Engineering/Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Video Game Development/Design. The majority of the companies who attended the event were actively recruiting for positions in their company and provided insight into the many different careers that can stem from earning a New England Tech degree. Several companies had representatives present who were NEIT Alumni themselves, and they did a great job of conveying how their degrees from NEIT helped shape their careers. The alumni were:

Many of the employers made comments about how impressed they were by the attendees’ professional attire and preparedness during the event, and some students and alumni were even able to secure interviews the day of the TechXpo. New England Institute of Technology would like to thank everyone who attended the event, as well as the volunteers who helped coordinate another successful Career Expo! New England Tech career events are always closed to the public, which makes it a great opportunity to network and make connections with employers who are specifically interested in NEIT students and alumni. Next year will mark the 20th annual Technology Career Expo and we hope to make it our largest and best-attended TechXpo ever!
