State-of-the-art learning labs expand hands-on training for future law enforcement, forensic and criminal justice professionals
New England Institute of Technology (NEIT) officially opened its new Criminal Justice training facility Tuesday, unveiling more than 4,000 square feet of dedicated learning space designed to give students hands-on experience in real-world public safety environments.
NEIT leaders, students, faculty and members of Rhode Island’s public safety community gathered at the university’s East Greenwich campus for a ribbon-cutting ceremony and tours of the new facility, which includes two forensics labs, a firearms simulation lab, courtroom and mock crime scenes.
The new space significantly expands experiential learning opportunities for students preparing for careers in law enforcement, forensic investigation, corrections, legal and court services, and other areas of public safety. Students will be able to apply concepts learned in the classroom through realistic scenarios that build practical skills in areas such as evidence collection, forensic investigation, courtroom procedure and decision-making.
“These new learning spaces represent something much larger than a physical renovation. It reflects New England Tech’s longstanding commitment to hands-on, accelerated, and career-focused education. That commitment is at the heart of everything we do,” said Douglas Sherman, Senior Vice President and Provost at the New England Institute of Technology. “Workforce needs continue to change, and our classrooms, laboratories, and learning environments must change with them.”
The facility is the latest investment in NEIT’s Criminal Justice programs and reflects the university’s broader focus on aligning education with the needs of employers and the workforce. Earlier this year, NEIT reduced annual tuition for its Criminal Justice programs by nearly 50%, from $35,925 to $18,540, for both incoming and current students.
For Criminal Justice Department Chair Michael Pezzullo, the new facility creates an opportunity to bring even more of the realities of the profession into the classroom. Pezzullo brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement experience to NEIT and currently serves as an administrative lieutenant and assistant patrol commander with the Cranston Police Department.
“Having worked in law enforcement for nearly 30 years, I know that the situations students prepare for in the classroom don’t always have simple answers,” said Pezzullo. “These labs give us the opportunity to put students in those situations, let them work through them, ask questions, and learn from their decisions. That kind of experience is invaluable as they prepare to enter this profession.”
The expansion also comes as public safety agencies continue to seek qualified professionals prepared to enter a demanding and evolving field. By creating opportunities for students to practice critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and decision-making in realistic settings, the new facility is designed to help bridge the gap between classroom learning and the expectations graduates will encounter in the workforce.
Retired Rhode Island State Police Lt. Colonel Kevin Barry, founder of Fit2Serve and a member of NEIT’s Technical Advisory Committee, joined the ceremony to offer an employer and industry perspective on the skills needed from the next generation of criminal justice professionals.
“Building a strong pipeline of criminal justice and public safety professionals isn’t just about getting more people interested in these careers – we also need to make sure the people entering the field are prepared for what the job actually requires today,” said Barry. “There’s a big difference between understanding something in a textbook and knowing how to apply it in the middle of a real situation. Learning environments like this give students the opportunity to practice those skills and better understand the realities of the profession before they enter the field.”
Current NEIT Criminal Justice student and Criminal Justice Club Vice President Elanah Wilson also participated in the event alongside classmates in the program, many of whom will spend the next few years training in the new facility.
“We have a realistic environment where we can process scenes, collect evidence, and put our classroom knowledge into practice,” said Wilson. “That hands-on approach is really what makes this program that much better.”
The new training facility complements NEIT’s accelerated Criminal Justice degree offerings, which include associate and bachelor’s degree pathways designed to prepare students to enter the workforce with both academic knowledge and hands-on, practical experience.
