New England Tech’s Frederick Gill Recognized By The Rhode Island Builders Association

June 5, 2017

For his tireless contributions to the construction students enrolled in Rhode Island’s career and technical high schools, the Rhode Island Builder’s Association presented Frederick Gill, Project Director at New England Institute of Technology (NEIT), with an award of appreciation.

Fred is a key participant in the Residential Construction Workforce Partnership (RCWP), a program sponsored by the Rhode Island Builders Association (RIBA). One goal of the RCWP is to help coordinate job training in the construction trades for high school students at Rhode Island’s career and technical centers and also help facilitate employee/employer connections through RIBA’s newly developed Jobs Bank RCWPJobs.com.

Fred works with students enrolled in construction and automotive programs at career and technical education (CTE) high schools in Rhode Island through the “Bridging the Gap,” Secondary/ Postsecondary Articulation in Technical Education (SPATE) grant assigned to New England Tech. As Fred stated: “Our vision going forward is to get all of the state’s construction programs together and build on our RCWP partnerships and teamwork with RIBA and the business community. This doesn’t involve just post-high school job opportunities but chances for college pathways as well where students may obtain college credits through New England Tech or other institutions of higher learning.”

Recently, Fred coordinated an extensive project with 300 construction students from the state’s CTE high schools. Students from each school constructed a portion of a 15-room designers show house, a cottage restoration, and solar greenhouse that were later assembled by the students and showcased at the Rhode Island Home Show held at the RI Convention Center in Providence. The greenhouse was so well done and so well received by the show participants that it will be reassembled this fall and donated to the DelSesto Middle School in Providence.
