Tips for Applying for 2024-2025 FAFSA Online

Each year, the Department of Education offers over $150 billion in federal student aid through grants, loans, and work-study.  To find out your financial aid eligibility, we encourage all students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Read on for instructions.

These critical steps must be completed to be considered for grants, loans, or work-study:

  1. Create a Federal Student Aid ID (FSA ID). Students and parents of dependent students will both need to create their own FSA ID.  Creating an FSA ID takes about 10 minutes, create an FSA ID here.
  2. Gather the following information before starting your application:
    • Social Security Number
    • An Alien Registration number (for non-U.S. citizens)
    • Federal income tax returns, W-2s, any other records of money earned. (applicants may be able to to automatically transfer tax return information instead using the IRS data retrieval tool)
    • Bank statements and records of any investments
    • Records of any untaxed income
  3. Visit https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa to complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Beware of false sites that request payment.
  4. Click the “Start New Form” button.
  5. Log in with your FSA ID (username and password). If you do not already have an FSA ID, please click the link to create one. Make a note of your FSA ID for future reference. Note: Contributors without an SSN can create a StudentAid.gov account to fill out their portion of your 2024–25 FAFSA form online.
  6. US Permanent Residents must have a copy of their alien registration number or permanent residence card.
  7. Select your role as “Student” or “Parent”. You (the student) should select “Student.” If a parent wants to start their dependent child’s FAFSA form, they should select the “Parent” option. (Dependent college students will need to provide their parents’ full name, Date of Birth, Social security number, and a valid email address).
  8. You must consent to link your 2022 federal tax data when prompted on the application. The FASFA requires tax data two years before the school year (the 2024-2025 school year requires 2022 tax data). Gather your records regarding 2022 untaxed benefits, such as child support, worker’s compensation, disability, Veterans benefits, etc.
  9. Select New England Institute of Technology to receive your Financial Aid results or enter our Federal School Code directly: 007845
  10. Fill out remaining application including demographics, dependency status, parent demographics (if applicable), and financial information.
  11. Sign and Submit! (Applicants will receive a confirmation when their FAFSA has been completed)
  12. The Financial Aid Office will receive your 2024-25 FAFSA results once your application is processed.
